Have some fun in Downtown New Braunfels, the first Saturday in May every year. Wein and Saengerfest will stir your senses while uncorking good spirits. The full day festival hosts a variety of events and activities.

Chef Showdown

This is a popular event at Wein and Saengerfest that you won’t want to miss! The showdown pits six amateur competitors against each other in two heats (two chefs per heat.) Each team is asked to prepare a dish using a gas grill to cook mystery ingredients in twenty minutes.

Where do the Wine Tasting & Brewers Proceeds Go?

Proceeds from wine tasting sales benefit the New Braunfels Parks Foundation and brewers sales benefit the historical downtown New Braunfels.

Wine Tasting Tickets:

14TH ANNUAL CHEF SHOWDOWN

Amateur Chef Competition

Saturday, May 6, 2017

Compete with other amateur chefs to show off your culinary skills, creativity and passion for food and wine.

Rules:

  • Applications must be received by April 21st, 2017.
  • All chefs must not currently work in a professional kitchen.
  • Teams must use every ingredient in the mystery basket.

Chefs will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Taste (15 points)
  • Creativity (10 points)
  • Dish Presentation (10 points)
  • Wine Pairing (10 points)
  • Performance Under Pressure (5 points)
  • Cleanliness (5 points)

Format:

  • A team is comprised of one chef and their chosen sous chef.
  • The Chef Showdown will pit six competitors against each other in two heats (four teams per heat).
  • Winners from each heat will compete in the final Showdown.
  • Chefs will be given a mystery basket of ingredients (including wine) and access to a shared pantry.
  • Chefs will have 20 minutes to prepare a dish complementing the mystery wine.
  • Chefs will prepare dishes using a propane grill with a side burner.
  • Chefs should bring their own pots, pans, bowls, knife, cutting board, tongs, spatula and towel.

Chef and owner Chad Niland will pair local favorite craft beers with two dishes: shrimp and blue grits in a tomato bacon cream sauce and restaurant-favorite ribeye and chips. Our mouths are watering!

GERMAN WINE 101 presented by ALPINE HAUS

Jacob Hammond will sample two German wines, Dr. Loosen’s Riesling Red Slate and Dr. Schmitt’s Pinot Noir, to illustrate the basics of wine tasting, pairing, varieties and even cooking tips. Just what we need to sample over 30 wines at the festival!

CRAFT BEER COCKTAILS presented by DOWNTOWN SOCIAL

Joe Collins, also from the local favorite Pour Haus, introduces a little known cocktail ingredient: beer! You’ll find it’s perfect for manacos, cheladas, shandies, snakebites, sidewalkers and more! We’re going to need more craft beer!

WINE: IT’S WHAT’S FOR DINNER presented by H-E-B

Nicole Washington will pair Llano Estacado’s Chardonnay with sea bass served with asparagus, mushrooms and Criolla butter sauce. She’ll also serve Llano’s Sangiovese-braised short ribs with truffle polenta. Oh-my-good-ness!
